The Duane and Anita Wamsley Spirit of Service Scholarship was created in 2022, thanks to a generous gift from Anita Wamsley to honor her husband Duane Wamsley, who served as principal at AHS from 1973 to 1985. The award is to be presented annually to a graduating senior who has contributed to the school or community in service leadership, specifically as an officer, committee chair, team captain, or other leadership role. The recipient should have plans for post high school education or training at an accredited two-year or four-year college, trade school or culinary institution.
Mr. Wamsley was recruited to AHS one year after the opening of the 'new' high school on Glamorgan Street. He and Anita, also a former educator, devoted their lives to the AHS students and faculty when he served as principal. Their children, Shelly Wamsley Rea (Class of 1982) and Stephen (Class of 1986) were extremely involved in school and the community during their time at AHS.
Duane passed away in 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer and will always be remembered for his student-centered approach to education. Today, Anita lives in Medina OH, where both her children reside and is a proud and devoted Nana to two adult granddaughters.
The AHS Foundation Board of Directors will administer this fund and the Scholarship Committee will review applications and select future recipients. We are grateful for the Wamsley family's confidence in the AHS Foundation and continuing support of AHS graduates.
