Valerie Vanaman – Graduated 1961; Inducted 2023
Valerie Vanaman is a 1961 graduate of AHS. Ohio State University is where she received both her undergrad (’64) and law degree (’67). Vanaman began her career at the Legal Aid Foundation of Long Beach, CA after receiving a Fellowship from the Federal Office of Economic Opportunity as one of the 50 Reginald Heber Smith fellows. She spent time as a teaching fellow at Harvard Law School and worked for the Children’s Defense Fund. A Resident of California, Valerie is a founding partner of Vanaman-German LLP, the largest California law firm that provides representation for children with disabilities. Lifetime awards include the Reginald Heber Smith – National Legal Aid Defender Association award (1979). This was based on outstanding service and achievement advancing the cause of equal access to justice. In 1997 she received a Civil Rights Award. Valerie Vanaman ‘61
During her career, she has been a member of the Bar of the US Supreme Court, The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Federal District Courts for the Central, Northern, and Southern districts of California, as well as the California, Ohio, and Massachusetts State Bar Associations. Her group has assisted many families over the years to ensure they are receiving the best education.
