RUSSELL REESE         AHS Class of 1918
Russell E. Reese participated in all sports for Alliance High School but his name is best remembered with Harry Vogeli’s as perhaps the greatest school and community basketball duo.
The two did not play in a losing Alliance High School home game in three seasons, 1915-16, 1916-17 and 1917-18.  The last squad outscored opponents 888-314, with a 111-10 win over Warren highlighting a 14-3 record.
Illness and financial conditions forced both Reese and Vogeli to quit school in their senior year.  But they teamed for 17 seasons with more than a dozen semi-pro teams, including the Warren Trumbull Steel squad that beat the Original New York Celtics.
Sometimes playing five nights a week, the twosome never missed work the day after a game.  Reese also played softball, tennis and golf.
Associated with the American Steel Foundries all of his working life, Reese became personnel supervisor and attributed his ability to deal with and understand people to the training he had in athletics.
Reese, now deceased, served on the local draft board for five years during World War II and was the recipient of an award from the President of the United States for meritorious service in this capacity.
