RAY HAMMONTREE AHS Class of 1930
Ray Hammontree packed a number of memorable experiences into his Alliance High School basketball and football career. He picks a game in each sport as his most thrilling: the 1928-29 season’s 3-2 win over Massillon, the lowest scoring basketball game in Alliance High School history, and the 1929 football win over Canton McKinley, 14-12, on “a rock pile called Goat Hill.” He picks as his most gratifying experience, “being lucky enough to play under one of the best coaches that ever came along, George Wilcoxon.” Hammontree attended Akron University, 1931-1934, and earned All-Ohio football honors. “I believe participation in athletics better prepares one for life, both physically and mentally”, he has written. “It gives one more confidence in being able to meet whatever is ahead in life and it also teaches how to get along with other people.” Hammontree, a resident of Uniontown, has put his philosophy to work. He has had a successful career as a maintenance engineer for the B. F. Goodrich Company, has found relaxation in woodworking and golf, and has served his church as a teacher, elder, and clerk of session. |
