LEROY RABER          AHS Class of 1928
LeRoy (Spitz) Raber won 18 varsity letters in basketball, football and track, six at Alliance High School and 12 at Mount Union College.
As an Aviator senior, he captained both football (13-0 winners over Massillon) and basketball, gaining All-County recognitions in both sports.
Running 88 yards for a touchdown against Michigan in his first Mount Union game, Raber was a two-year All-Ohio end (honor team captain in 1931) and forward, playing on a pair of Ohio Conference cage champions.  He also won the Conference javelin throw and still holds the Mount Union school record.
Fittingly, he was in the first group of living initiates into Mount Union’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
After being an assistant at Orrville and Alliance he became head coach at Kenton High. Raber joined the Barberton High staff in 1941.  He guided his 1950-51 Magic cagers to the state semi-finals, served as president and director of the Ohio High School Coaches Association and was a popular clinic speaker,
In 1944-45 he was a US Navy V-12 athletic specialist at Missouri Valley College.
Having retired from coaching, Raber continues teaching at Barberton where he is official scorer and heads the city’s summer recreation program.
