JOHN BORTON AHS Class of 1951
John Borton was a three-year regular in football, basketball and baseball at Alliance High School and was elected governor of Buckeye Boy’s State. Football was Borton’s main sport as the talented quarterback, He was a 1949 and 1950 All-Ohio pick. His biggest thrill was the 14-0 win over Massillon in 1948, the first Alliance defeat of the Tigers since 1932. Attending Ohio State University, he won four letters, set the Big Ten record for completions in a single game and earned All-Big Ten and All-American honors. When Ohio State beat Michigan 27-7 in 1952, the first Buckeye win in the rivalry since 1944, he threw three touchdown passes and scored once on a quarterback sneak. Injured in 1954, Borton saw limited action as senior co-captain of the Ohio State team that won the national title and played in the Rose Bowl. Following two years as a US Navy supply officer for Fleet Aircraft Squadron 51, he joined the Cleveland Browns in 1957. Despite an injured arm, he completed 12 of 18 passes in an exhibition game against Detroit. However, subsequent injuries cut his promising pro career to one year. Since 1958, Borton has been associated with Republic Steel in a sales capacity in Cleveland, Columbus and now Toledo. |
