Joe E. Mills was a baseball, basketball and football standout for Alliance High School, captaining the 1916-17 basketball team. He was a member of the 1914 grid team which outscored the opponents 188-36, but could do no better than a 6-2-2 record, losing two games by 10 points (Massillon, 3-0, and Martins Ferry, 7-0) and scoring 13 points in two ties (Akron South, 0-0, and New Philadelphia, 13-13). Starting college at Mount Union and then transferring to Carnegie Tech, Mills played football at both schools. Mills logged seven years as a player in the pioneer days of professional football, playing with the Akron Pros and the Ironton Tanks, the forerunner of the modern-day Detroit Lions of the National Football League. Born September 3, 1897, he was a sales tax examiner for the state of Ohio for 28 years. His business associations also included the United States Steel Corporation.
