HARRY VOGELI AHS Class of 1918
Harry E. Vogeli, half of the famed Vogeli-Reese basketball duo, enjoyed many highlights in an Alliance High School and semi-pro career that covered 20 successful seasons. He recalls a perfect night from action where he made all nine shots he took in a game; the 110-10 win over Warren in Alliance’s record high game; and a semi-pro victory over the Original New York Celtics, then ‘The toast of pro basketball.’ He remembers friends on such semi-pro teams as the Cope Furnitures, Eagles, Merchants and Studebakers of Alliance, the Ex-Seniors and Sinclair Oils of Canton and a half dozen more. Vogeli also recalls, “My activity in sports has contributed greatly to my life in the business world and I owe a great deal to Coach Sam Willaman, who taught me discipline and good sportsmanship.” Learning the engineering trade at the Alliance Machine Company, where he worked for 11 years, he spent five years with the Electric Furnace Company in Salem and then 30 years with the Salem Brosius Company, Inc. of Salem and later Pittsburgh. Vogeli retired from his position as field engineer in 1963 and resides in Alliance. |
