HAROLD "CANDY" CARROLL AHS Class of 1951
Harold “Candy” Carroll entered Alliance High School as a sophomore in the 1948-1949 school year. He played under legendary Aviator head football coach Mel Knowlton. During the 1948 campaign, ‘Candy’ became a starter as a sophomore and scored 17 touchdowns for a team that beat Massillon Washington 14-0. That year, the Aviators were 9-0-1, tying only Canton McKinley. During his Aviator career, Carroll earned three varsity letters. In his senior season, he was named the Aviator’s Most Valuable Offensive Back, All Stark County and earned All-Ohio recognition. Upon AHS graduation, Carroll was offered a full football scholarship to Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He was a star running back for the “Red Cats” (now Spartans), who were coached by Eddie Finnigan (WRU HOF). Finnigan called Carroll one of the best fullbacks to come on the scene at Western Reserve University in over 20 years. By graduation from Western Reserve in 1957, Carroll earned 11 varsity letters, four in football, four in basketball and three in baseball. His football honors included All Mid-Athletic Conference in 1952 to All President’s Athletic Conference selection in 1955 and 1956. Carroll served as a football team captain his senior year, was named the team’s Player of the Year and chosen Area Outstanding Student-Athlete. ‘Candy’ was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, and eventually played one season with the semi-pro Cleveland Bulldogs. Carroll graduated from Western Reserve University in 1957 (now Case Western Reserve University), earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He was inducted into the Case Western Reserve University Sports Hall of Fame in October of 1989. He continued his education obtaining a Master’s Degree from Cleveland State University and his Ed. D from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Carroll’s followed a career in education, included teaching and administrative positions, in Ohio, Massachusetts and California, until his retirement in 2001. He currently resides in Bermuda Dunes, California. Dr. Carroll was nominated for the AHS Athletic Hall of Fame by Isaac Wright. |
