GEORGE WILCOXON          AHS Class of 1923
George M. Wilcoxon was one of the best things a doctor could have ordered for Alliance High School athletics.  The football, basketball and track standout graduated from Mount Union College in 1928 and later earned his Medical Degree at the University of Chicago Medical School.
An All-Ohio back, Wilcoxon made Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” by scoring all the points, two field goals and a safety in Mount Union’s 6-2 win over Akron.  He was also an All-Ohio in basketball.
He never played in a losing Ohio Conference basketball game at Mount Union, twice leading the Ohio Conference champions in scoring and ranking 6th and 7th in the state.  His pro play was with the Alliance Studebakers, Canton Orphans and Salem Althouse teams.
Alliance fans proudly remember Dr. Wilcoxon’s successful return as Head Football Coach at AHS, 1927 to 1939 with a record of 83-19-2. He also coached AHS basketball to an 83-37 record.  He coached the teams with best-ever marks in both sports, the 11-0-1 grid season of 1932 and the 21-1 cage season of 1931-32.  There were four other football seasons of only one loss
Dr. Wilcoxon served in World War II as Major Wilcoxon, flight surgeon with the 302nd Bomb Group of the Army Air Force in Europe.
