GEORGE O'BRIEN AHS Class of 1932
George O’Brien, a football and track performer at Alliance High School, participated in both as a Mount Union College freshman in 1933, but concentrated on track as a sophomore. Undefeated in the mile and 880 in 1934, he led Mount Union to its first cinder win over Wooster in 19 years and set marks that withstood assault until recent years. Enrolling at Ohio State in 1935, he was picked by Coach Larry Snyder to run an exhibition 1500 meter race as a feature of the Annual Cleveland High Indoor Meet at Public Auditorium. The following year O’Brien was a member of the Buckeye two-mile relay and sprint medley teams that placed first in the Penn Relays. The ‘880 distance’ ace participated in the World Labor Athletic Carnival in Randalls Island, New York, and returned there for the US team tryout finals for the Berlin Olympics after placing fifth in the Chicago semi-finals. O’Brien’s times in his specialty were among the best for 1936 according to THE AMATEUR ATHLETE, an AAU publication. His post-graduate running was for the 69th Regiment of the New York Athletic Club. At the time of his death, August 22, 1966, he was a contracts administrator for the Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Company. |
