DON ALBERT AHS Class of 1951
Don Albert ‘51 began as a caddie at the Alliance Country Club. At age sixteen he won the Stark County Junior and the Akron Goodpark Junior tournaments, played in the National Caddie Tournament in Columbus twice and the Jaycees tournament in Houston, Texas. At AHS, he was a member of the basketball team and went to Buckeye Boys State. In golf, Don advanced to the state tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course three times. As a student at Purdue University, he golfed four years for the Boilermakers, helping them win the Big Ten Conference championship his sophomore year. He was an NCAA medalist and broke Arnold Palmer’s record of 137 in Houston. In the mid nineteen fifties Don served in the U S Marines. He continued to excel as a golfer and won both the All-Marine Tournament and the All-Service Branches Tournament in 1956. Don golfed in The Masters and the Western AM Tournament (1951 and 1953) where he was a match-play semi-finalist. He qualified for the U S Amateur ten times and for the U S Open in 1953. He won two Ohio State amateur championships in the 1950’s and was president of the Columbus District Golf Association in 1997. Don has enjoyed an incredible golfing career, one that has fostered friendships with many well known professional golfers including Arnold Palmer. He has seven career holes-in-one and was selected to the Senior Challenge team on five occasions. Don is a board member of the Ohio State Golf Association and the Columbus District Golf Association. |
